The region was under control of the Viet Minh throughout the French war in Vietnam and continued to be so throughout the phase of American involvement in the Vietnam War, despite concerted efforts on the part of US and South Vietnamese forces to destabilize the region as a power base for their enemy, the communist North Vietnamese–sponsored and –directed South Vietnamese insurgent movement, the National Liberation Front or Viet Cong

Production[edit]
In 2016, copper production at Morenci was 848 million pounds (385,000,000 kg). In 2017, copper production at Morenci was 737 million pounds (334,000,000 kg). 3,300 people were employed there.[3] As production declined, it was estimated in 2023 that the mine would be exhausted in 20 years.[4]
The mine is served by the Freeport-McMoRan Industrial Railroad, which interchanges with Arizona Eastern Railway in Clifton. The railroad is used to bring chemicals (primarily sulfuric acid) to the mine, as well as ship out copper concentrate.[5][6]
History[edit]
The mine was established as an underground mine in 1871 by the Longfellow Mining Company and was converted into an open-pit mine by the Phelps Dodge Corporation starting in 1937.
